In 2020, the Cave Hill Campus hosted virtual orientation events for new undergraduate students for the first time. The annual Orientation Forum introduced new students to Blackbird Pride and the Campus community and offered critical information to help them navigate Campus processes and systems, succeed in their studies and stay healthy, safe and well.
Broadcast live via Zoom on August 28th, the 2020 Forum was immediately followed by five Zoom ‘Breakout Sessions’. These allowed students to ask questions and get additional details about registration, student development programmes, admissions, fee payments, academic success and the University Bookshop.
During and after the Forum, students were invited to give feedback about the event. The majority described their Orientation experience as ‘good’ or ‘very good’ and several highlighted opportunities for enhancement. For example, students said that the Breakout Sessions should be scheduled at different times (rather than concurrently) so that they could attend as many as they needed to. As a result, in 2021, the Orientation Planning Committee organized a series of virtual Information Sessions on different dates between August 23rd and 30th. New students could, therefore, attend any or all of the scheduled sessions, based on their interests.
