Enhanced mental health services for students

In April 2021, students were invited to complete the Student Wellbeing Survey, which aimed to assess their awareness of, usage of, and satisfaction with specific services and provisions related to health (including mental health), safety and security at Cave Hill.

Students highlighted several opportunities for enhancement of psychological counselling services. For example, they recommended increasing the number of counsellors and/or counselling bookings so that it would be easier for them to book initial and follow-up appointments. In response, the Office of Student Services has taken steps to recruit a new part-time counsellor, whose service hours would be flexible, providing students with more options for booking sessions.

Additionally, survey participants suggested that lecturers be sensitized to the additional mental health challenges that students have been facing, especially since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. They hoped that lecturers would take this into consideration when planning course workload. As a result, the Psychological Counsellor updated the Faculty Guide Booklet for Students in Distress for dissemination to teaching staff.

Students also requested the continuation of online booking and consultation services beyond the pandemic. These requests have been heard and the Office of Student Services plans to maintain this system in the future.
