In 2020, as students prepared to transition to hybrid learning (online and in-person), the Student Enrolment & Retention Unit (SERU) invited them to complete a survey so that the Campus could understand their concerns and address any questions they might have. The results revealed that there was uncertainty on a range of topics, including the meaning of key terms in the hybrid environment, how courses would be delivered and assessed, equality of online and in-person classes, registration issues, and health and safety concerns. In response, SERU developed a series of comprehensive FAQs for students. These were published via the SERU website and the link was shared with students via email, the Campus App and the SERU social media pages.
To further support students’ preparation for the new modes of teaching and learning the SERU added an interactive self-study module on Succeeding Online to the Student Academic Skills and Success Hub to which students have access on the elearning system. The unit also prepared comprehensive Netiquette Guidelines for Conduct in the Online Environment and crib sheets with tips and strategies for succeeding online, which were mailed to students and shared on the Camus App and social media. The SERU sought to ensure that students had ready access to contact information for all major academic, student support and administrative offices by creating an information block on the eLearning entry page and invited students to reach out to the unit with any questions or queries via the Campus App, email, live chat and WhatsApp.
